“A HUGE THANK YOU!”
Residents and staff at Tynwald Residential Home were delighted to be presented with £131.80 raised by The Hythe Bay Children’s Centre.
The link between the Children’s Centre and residents of Tynwald began last summer with a meeting in the sunny garden at the home on Hillside Street. Discussions focussed on research that provides evidence of the mental, physical and emotional benefits of inter-generational projects bringing together the very young and the very old.
The meeting ignited a determination to develop a programme of play-dates and after a hugely successful trial visit, a three-weekly rolling programme was put in place. Since last autumn, residents at Tynwald have welcomed groups of parents and babies, nursery children and a group of year 5 and 6 pupils accompanied by staff from the Children’s Centre.
Parents have the chance to talk about the challenges of parenthood, the children play with other adults within a secure environment and look forward to finding new toys and games to explore. There is the chance to reminisce and for the older children to learn about the past, and each session ends with group singing of nursery rhymes, You Are My Sunshine, and on occasion, Happy Birthday.
Sadly, the weekly visits have come to an end following a change in funding which has resulted in the closure of the Hythe Bay Children’s Centre. Staff from the nursery will continue to bring children to play at Tynwald every three weeks but the staff members who were instrumental in getting this initiative off the ground have been forced to find positions elsewhere or accept redundancy.
In a final act of generosity before the centre closed at the end of the school term, staff and families organised a raffle, an Activity Day and a sponsored walk from the Children’s Centre to Tynwald and back. The funds donated will be used by the home to purchase puzzles, story books, games and toys which can be shared and enjoyed by residents and the nursery children during future visits.
Following the closure of the Children’s Centre, there are plans to start up a Tynwald Parents’ & Babies group again, and existing links with local scouting groups can be strengthened by inviting them in to join with activities and help to earn badges. In the past, Tynwald has supported three young people in their bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards, and currently supports two volunteers, one with the bronze, and one with the silver award.
The trustees and staff at Tynwald would like to say a huge “thank you”, to the staff from the nursery and former Children’s Centre, especially Shirley Johnson and Dana Araque-Brown, whose initial enthusiasm and continued commitment turned an idea into actuality.
