Restaurants in Folkestone have come together to kick-start the crowdfunding to restore the Leas Lift in Folkestone. They are launching the Leas Lift restaurant month on the 1st of September, where diners will have an optional, small donation added to their bill, as well as special menu items in some restaurants to choose from. Many restaurants are involved, including The Pullman, The Harbour Inn, Lubens, Follies, The Cliffe Restaurant in The View Hotel, Rocksalt, The Smokehouse, The Grand, The Bouverie Tap, Coppers in Hythe and the Holy Pundit in the Hythe Imperial with more hoping to join in during the month.
The Leas Lift, which is Grade II listed, is one of the few remaining water balanced lifts in the country. It was closed in 2017 after the Health and Safety Executive determined that a secondary breaking system needed to be installed to comply with safety legislation. In September 2017 the Folkestone Leas Lift Company CIC was formed with the intention that the Leas Lift be brought back into use, with a sustainable and long term future. They aim to return the building into a functional and safe condition and to restore the Lifts to its Victorian glory.
