From 10:00am to 14:00pm
The Shorncliffe Trust are participating in this year’s Heritage Open Days Event, hosting Free guided tours from the Shorncliffe Redoubt (Shorncliffe Military Cemetery).
The guides will explain about the evolvement of a military garrison over 200 years and you will see the Napoleonic Redoubt, almost forgotten about and unmarked for over a century, with the site interpreted and plotted by the Shorncliffe Trust's chairman Christopher Shaw.
The land at Shorncliffe Camp is rich in archaeological remains relating to the military use of the site over some two centuries. The archaeological potential of these remains is high as is the overall significance of the site. Some archaeological remains are currently under threat and require attention.
As well as the 200-year-old Redoubt, there are buildings from the Victorian and Edwardian Era (not accessible) but visible from the road. Also WWI practice trenches and a WWII pill box. The tour will include the Shorncliffe Military Cemetery (as long as there is not an internment in progress).
Along with the tour, the Trust will have various photographs, documents and artefacts so visitors can help interpret the remains.
